You may be surprised to find that many of your favorite conventional sunless tanners are filled with nasty ingredients. These can cause a disruption to your endocrine system or give you an allergic reaction.
Such is the case with a few of my past favorite sunless tanners. So, I decided to go on a hunt to find an all natural alternative to a conventional sunless tanner.
There aren’t many to choose from, but these two sunless tanners looked promising. The Chocolate Sun Tanning Cream in Cocoa Clow is pretty famous in the green beauty community for being an excellent alternative to conventional tanning lotions. Beauty by Earth also makes an organic and all natural self-tanner, but if I am being honest, I hadn’t heard much hype about it.
So, I am putting these two sunless tanners head-to-head to find which is the best all natural and organic sunless-tanner for you!
The Chocolate Sun tanner comes in three shades and retails for $40.00. It has eight ounces of product that is contained in a plastic jar with a pump. It doesn’t have a color guard in the product, meaning you can’t immediately see where the color is placed. It is crucial you blend this in well, so it doesn’t become patchy as the color develops.

I was pleasantly surprised that the tanner did not have that typical sunless tanner smell, which is a bit plasticky and not very nice. It smelled like chocolate when first applied, and gradually faded away to nothing. It takes about eight or so hours to develop so I would recommend applying before bed.
The tan was not super dark in the way conventional dark tanners, like St. Tropez, make you dark. However, the tan was incredibly natural looking. It looked like it took my natural tone and boosted it a couple of notches! No strong smell came as it developed, and the tan slowly and evenly faded away over the next week.
Beauty By Earth
Beauty by Earth makes a sunless tanner in one shade, and it will cost you $24.99 for just a little less product than the Chocolate Sun tanner. It comes out of the tube very thick and white, almost like sunscreen. Also like sunscreen, it takes a long time to sink into the skin and loose its white cast on the skin.
Water, Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Dihydroxyacetone (Sugar Cane Derived), Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Organic Cocos Nucifera, (Coconut) Oil, Glycerin (Vegetable), Organic Camellia Oleifera (Japanese Green Tea) Leaf Extract
Organic Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Organic Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract
Organic Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Organic Argania Spinosa Kernel (Argan) Oil, Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Pulp Extract, Vanilla Tahitensis (Vanilla) Fruit Extract
The tanner can be bundled with the accompanying self-tan mitts, and you can save a decent amount doing that. I would highly recommend purchasing the self-tanning application mitts if you buy this sunless tanner. The exfoliating mitt is probably my favorite, it is amazing at getting rid of the previous tan and any gross dead skin you may have. The other two application mitts are incredibly soft and really high quality, much better than St. Tropez.
As far as the actual product goes, I think it is very comparable to conventional tanning products. However, that being said, while you may get darker with this tan than with the chocolate sun tanner, you have to deal with the “sunless tanner smell” that is infamously known by all. Also, it can cling to any dryer skin ares like your elbows and knees, so apply a moisturizer before if you are using this.
I have to say, I prefer the Chocolate Sun tanner. It doesn’t cling to dry skin or develop any smell like the Beauty by Earth sunless tanner. But, I would still recommend getting the mitts from Beauty by Earth, they are truly fantastic! These sunless tanners are both great options, but the Chocolate Sun tanner was the best.
